After nearly six years of negotiations, the World Trade Organisation's Doha Round of trade talks collapsed in late July amid accusations of political leaders placing the views of a well-connected and influential interest group above the greater good of the global community. While politically-sensitive issues like agricultural subsidies to European and American farmers make the headlines, experts are warning that a new era of "economic patriotism" is starting to emerge around the world and in China in particular.
A series of new rules and regulations in Beijing has caused growing anxiety inside corporate boardrooms and prompted warnings from EU and American officials. On June 24, Beijing announced that it will set up a commission to combat monopolies, which could hurt overseas companies that have dominant market share. It's also considering new rules that would limit foreign participation in several industrial sectors that are deemed critical to the country's future development.
