A glance around the room at a recent lunch for Yale University alumni in a five-star Beijing hotel would have provoked two thoughts in the casual onlooker: First, the abundance of monogrammed badges, ties and jackets suggested an awful lot of pride in being a graduate of an American university; and second, the exorbitant ticket price suggested everyone in the room did very well upon returning to China. Sure enough, name cards from Fortune 500 companies were proffered with enquiries as to one's year of graduation.
