US to File Two WTO Cases Against China
Aggregated Source: China HearsayMy predictions regarding a possible IP case have apparently been wrong, ’cause here it comes. Oops.
Intro:
. . . the US administration this coming week will file two actions
challenging China’s lax enforcement of its own antipiracy laws as well
as its tight restrictions on the distribution of foreign movies, music
and printed material . . .
I first heard the news this morning, so I’m not ready with a full report. However, the announcement does make last week’s IP news from China much more interesting with this context.
If you recall, there were several developments, including a new Judicial Interpretation from the Supreme People’s Court on criminal enforcement of IP infringement (I blogged on this earlier today). There was also the release of the government’s 2007 IP enforcement strategy report (see my post last Friday for links). Both of these things were in the works of course for some time, but who knows when Beijing knew that the US was moving forward with formal dispute resolution? Were they specifically trying to forestall this? Speculation is fun.
Some links for now, more comments later.
