Protecting Olympic-related IPR
Aggregated Source: China HearsayFrom People’s Daily:
China will shortly issue a new plan to protect the logo of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, said a senior trademark official on Tuesday in Beijing.
China has been working on a complete set of schemes to protect
Olympic intellectual property rights (IPR), said Zhao Gang, deputy head
of the trademark department under the State Administration for Industry
and Commerce, at a press conference.“We will soon issue a new plan to prevent infringements of the Olympic logo,” Zhao said, providing no details about the plan.
Probably doesn’t need to be said, but once again, this is more an enforcement issue than anything else. Sure, the logos and other IP involved here are slightly different than standard trademarks, and the recent regs pertaining to these IPRs may be useful.
However, the big difference here is that the Beijing government is adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards infringement, meaning that enforcement has been stepped up.
While this makes the city look good and the Olympics sponsors happy, it probably makes a lot of other IPR owners in other industries pissed off that this shift of enforcement resources has not favored them.
