Gibbons, 54, was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in jail and deportation for insulting Islam by naming a teddy bear Muhammad — the name of Islams prophet. The naming was part of a class project for her 7-year-old students at a private school in Sudan.

In recent years, China has voiced its demand that it receive the respect due of a “World Leader.” But respect is earned not given because one wants it. Why ask for respect when it stays silent when it has a chance to exert its influence internationally. For instance, as one of Sudan’s biggest supporters why has it yet done nothing to facilitate a happy ending to the situation surrounding Ms. Gibbons. There doesn’t seem to be any downside to lending a helping hand.
