Modernization is not everything

And we remembered the good young days, and the free land, and the times of plenty, and the gladness and sunshine; and we called ourselves brothers…
"O Imber, thou art indeed a fool," said howkan.
Jack London said in his novel The League of the Old Man.
What this story strikes me is that modern civilization is not necessarily to make people's life better. As a student who has been educated under the institutional system, I have long perceived that knowledge is power, which can shape people's destiny. however, it is ridiculous that those who are well educated not only has little or no help for their poor family, who support their study, but also, what's worse, betray their family as they regard them ignorant. Therefore, knowledge is power, only for one, not for his poor family, or rather, for a certain privileged group, not for the poor ordinary people, like peasants in China.
Then what is the outlet for them? I want to stress that people shall not lay too much hope on education. What we need to do is to respect the tradition, because everything has its own way, moreover, education and science is not everything. Every group has their own lifestyle, and they can continue and preserve their own culture.
